ms skeptic’s great writings

untitled. r.d.

She sat cross legged uncomfortably drifting in and out of sleep. Her head sweetly swayed in imaginary intoxication of her silent dreams. Her face was delicate and impeccably naïve, a vision of indecent purity. Her hair quietly rustled by a secret breeze and fell loosely over her exposed shoulder. Her glow was mesmerizing and he noticed her almost immediately.

This was no ordinary happenchance meeting; he knew this was destiny.

He watched as she smiled inconsistently, he thought she must be having a good dream. He couldn’t stray. He remained there silently across the room admiring, fixated on her beauty memorizing every detail, every curve of her face, every imperfection perfectly. His eyes were entranced, a spell had been cast, cupid’s arrow struck his heart and he was done. He knew right then and there this was it, his downfall, waved the white flag and admitted defeat.

She stirred. He grew nervous of possibility. He couldn’t wait any longer. He walked towards his fate, praying silently. He couldn’t wait for her to wake; this infatuation had baited his heart and forced his hand.

He slithered towards her deliberate and sly and slipped his phone in her bag before retreating back to the table he had grown fond of; the set of the opening act of this love affair. He packed up his bag, stole one last gaze and left his life to chance and hoped that this was more than just a temporary glitch of his heart.

Her head teetered slightly and she abruptly awoke as though a leg from her chair had been suddenly knocked from underneath her. She slowly looks at her watch and looks alarmed. Damn I’m late. She hastily gathered her books and her bag.

He watched her clumsily slam her leg on the side of the table and watched her face as it cringed in pain. He found it cute and he adored her even more. His curiosities were overwhelming. He wondered what her favorite color was, her favorite flower, and her name. He watched as she left through the door, half running.

She threw her bag on the passenger side and started the car. A phone rang. The ringtone didn’t seem familiar. She rummaged through her bag looking for the source of the noise.

“Hello?” She didn’t recognize the phone.

“Hi, I think you have my phone.” His voice was deep and almost sexy.

“Yea, I guess I do… I don’t know how that happened?”

“Haha…I put it there. I wanted to get to know you but you were sleeping and I couldn’t ask you for your number so I left you my phone”

She was amused by his forwardness. “Is that right?”

“I mean, we have to meet now right? So you can give my phone back to me”

“What if I decided to keep it?” She laughed infectiously.

“I didn’t take you as the type to take something and run.”

“I didn’t take anything, you freely gave” She smiled as she waited for the light to turn green. “So, stranger… how do you propose I give you back your phone?”

“How about you bring it to dinner? And my name’s Danny”

“Hi, Danny. You got some guts don’t you? Leaving your phone in a strange girl’s bag.”

“It’s just a phone and I didn’t catch your name…”

“It’s Sophia.”

“Ah, cute name, cute girl… so are you up for dinner?”

She thought about how hard he had worked to get her attention and thought it was cute. “Sure, I do have to return your phone.”

“How about tonight?”

“Umm, where?”

“Well, I was thinking a picnic around 4pm at AroVista. Do you know where that is?” His heart raced. It was awhile since he felt the butterflies.

“Yea, sure… I’ll meet you there.” She didn’t know why she agreed, she knew it was nuts… but she felt like she had to.

“Oh, I almost forgot… I have 3 questions.”

“Ok, shoot”

“Favorite color? Favorite flower? And favorite food?”

“Easy! Yellow, sunflowers, and sushi”

“See you at 4.”

..

She didn’t know what she was doing. She didn’t even know who this Danny was, he could be a psychopath for all she knew. But something told her it was going to change her. She drove to the park nervous; she didn’t know what to expect. She drove up to the parking lot and saw a field of sunflowers. She smiled.

“Danny?”

“Hi Sophia, I’m Danny…nice to finally meet you. It’s about time…”

“I’m not late am I?” She glanced at her watch.

“No, it’s about time we met.”

She didn’t know what to think. He didn’t seem real; he seemed almost manufactured.

“Wow, so does this usually work for all your conquests?”

“You’re not a conquest. You’re going to be my wife.”

She didn’t know what to say. She was taken aback by his assertiveness.

“I might not be your type…”

“Is that code for I’m not yours?” He said defiantly.

“It’s not that…” she felt cornered. “You never know…”

“That’s why we’re here… so I can sweep you off your feet and make you mine.”

….

She laughed and in one blink they were coupled. She felt at ease with him, things came naturally, almost nonchalantly. Time floated by on daffodil clouds and masquerade kisses. She was good to him and she made him feel as though he wanted to be good. She did things that he never experienced, he knew she was different but didn’t realize that she’d grab a place in his heart. She’d left post-its across his heart and made him understand what love was. He would always remember her for that.

BANG! BANG! BANG!
“OPEN THE DOOR!”

She awoke to find herself swimming in angry noise. She got up and went to open the door.

“You’re drunk”

“I’m NOT drunk.” He stumbled onto her.

“Go inside Danny.” Her voice shaking. “I don’t like it when you’re drunk. You’re not you.”

“What if THIS is me? Without you changing me…”

“I didn’t know I changed you… I’m sorry.”

“Do you love me Sophie?” He stammered through his drunken haze.

“Danny…”

He leaned over and kissed her.

“Stop. You’re drunk Danny.” She felt panic rise from her throat.

He kissed her again. “Do you love me?” His voice was panged with anger.

“I do… but Danny, we talked about this…I’m not ready.” She scrambled to get away.

“But it’s been a year Sophie. A god damn YEAR. Show me you love me.”

“You know how I feel about this, you know it’s important for me to wait for marriage.”

“Fine, let’s get married” he yelled.

“It’s not that easy Danny.”

“Then tell me how it is.” He shook her and hit her across her face. The face that he loved, he endeared, and kissed on an everyday occurrence. Her cheek swelled angry red fingers. He had her pinned. She fought underneath him. “Stop Danny, you’re scaring me…” He reached under her shirt. He felt her convulse in fear. He pulled her shorts off. “Da…nny… Danny…” Her breaths were mixed with tears. She pleaded with him.

“I LOVE YOU Sophie, so much” He entered her. She cried.

She laid in her bed alone. She couldn’t stop the tears, they had formed a pathetic pool on her pillow. Danny had gone and she was alone. She was lost and didn’t know where to turn. She opened the desk drawer, took out a sheet of paper, and wrote a letter.

He awoke in the morning in a purple haze. He couldn’t remember what he had done. He didn’t want to remember. He raced to Sophia’s. The door was unlocked, had he been there last night?

“Babe?” No answer.

He walked over to her room. His eyes began to well up with tears.

“Babe?” His voice now trembling with the possibility of the unimaginable. She remained still. The pillow was still wet with tears. The sheets stained in her affliction. He saw the note.

It read: I forgive you.
